problem:
Arriving in the high desert with my Newfoundland dog, I was soon warned by a neighbor that the Idaho summer had killed both of his. They are bred for working in the North Atlantic Ocean, love water, are almost impervious to cold, but are ill equipped for hot and dry.
solution:
He had a plastic wading pool for his first summer here, but it didn’t take me long to turn the irrigation ditch that ran through my parcel into a nice water feature that cooled the Newfy any time he wanted. The diversion filled quickly at the beginning of the irrigation season and took nothing from the flow from then through the final shutoff in autumn.
