ham radio class

hamradio-300x225As an integral part of our posse, and any disaster response preparation, radio is a consideration. Internet, wireless phones, land-lines, satellite, power grid and more are vulnerable in many situations.

Ham radio is older than almost any electronic communication and very well populated with people and equipment that are prepared for just about any telecommunications failure they can dream up … which, by the way, is well beyond anything you can dream up. It is also surprisingly versatile, even with entry-level equipment and beginner-level skills.

Having the expertise and tools of ham operators on your emergency response team is fundamental. Being a licensed and at least somewhat knowledgeable radio operator is practical as well as basic good citizenship.

The September class is full. Contact us if you want to be part of another class

The Ada County Posse is coordinating a FREE ham radio license course. We have an expert trainer donating his time and Radio Shack donating the classroom. There are two four-hour classes two Saturdays in a row and the licensing exam the following Saturday.

We will all be using the book The Ham Whisperers as our study guide and reference manual. While there are several good books out there, this is about as good as any and costs a bit less than others.

Ham Technician Training Schedule (entry level license)
Saturday, Sept 22, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Saturday, Sept 29, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Ham Technician Exam
Saturday, October 6 (don’t know the time yet)

All three are at:
Radio Shack, 2031 E. Fairview Ave., Meridian, ID, 83642

You should try to get the book before the first class. While not a requirement, it will serve you well while learning, and for reference long after you pass your exam.

As a Ham Operator you will be a valuable part of your community when communication is among the greatest prizes.
